Published
Grutas del Mamut is a cave-and-recreation area about 7 km from San Cristóbal de las Casas, on the road toward Tenejapa in Ejido Agua de Pajarito.
It works best as a short nature outing rather than a full travel day.
Quick answer
Distance: about 7 km from San Cristóbal
Setting: cave, green recreation area and stream
Current Visit Chiapas hours: daily, 08:00–17:00
Access update: the municipality inaugurated paving improvements to the access in April 2026
Entrance price: confirm locally; current web sources disagree enough that SanCrisGo does not publish one figure as definitive
What is there
Visit Chiapas describes the site as a tourist park built around the Grutas del Mamut, named for a rock formation that resembles a mammoth.
The same state tourism page currently lists facilities and activities including:
- the cave visit;
- green areas and a stream;
- palapas and grills;
- toilets and parking;
- a viewpoint and suspension bridge;
- rustic raft rides;
- horse rides and other recreational activities.
Individual activities may cost extra and can change independently of the basic entrance.
Getting there from San Cristóbal
The site is on the road toward Tenejapa, in Ejido Agua de Pajarito. For visitors without their own vehicle, a taxi is the simplest transport to arrange directly.
Current visitor sources also mention colectivo access, but SanCrisGo did not find a sufficiently reliable current official boarding point or fare to publish a step-by-step route. If you want to use public transport, confirm the current colectivo locally before leaving Centro.
The access road changed in 2026
On April 21, 2026, the San Cristóbal municipality inaugurated paving work on the access to Grutas del Mamut. This is useful current context if you find older reports describing a rougher approach.
Road conditions can still change with weather and maintenance, so the municipal project should not be read as a guarantee about every meter of the route on every day.
Hours and entrance fee
Visit Chiapas currently lists the site Monday–Sunday, 08:00–17:00.
Entrance information is less reliable. Current local and travel pages show materially different amounts and sometimes separate the park entrance from cave or activity fees. No sufficiently authoritative current tariff was found that resolves those differences.
For that reason, confirm the current entrance and any activity fee at the site rather than planning around an old online price.
Mamut vs Rancho Nuevo vs Arcotete
Choose Mamut if you want a short cave-and-park outing close to the city.
Choose Rancho Nuevo if you want a larger pine-forest cave excursion. Choose El Arcotete if the natural stone arch, river and park setting matter more than a cave-focused visit.
