The museum describes Chiapas amber as fossilized plant resin around 25 million years old. Color alone does not determine value; quality, size, inclusions, workmanship and other characteristics also matter.
Buying amber
Amber jewelry and polished pieces are sold around Centro, craft markets and jewelry shops. No individual stall should be treated as automatically reliable without information about the piece and seller.
