What is a temazcal?
The Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia describes temazcal as one of Mesoamerica’s oldest persistent practices, documented from pre-Hispanic periods and continuing in Indigenous communities today. The Nahuatl term temazcalli is commonly translated as “house of steam.”
The cultural meaning is broader than a modern sauna. Depending on the community and facilitator, the practice may include ritual, purification, prayer, song, medicinal plants, silence or group reflection.

What should you bring?
Requirements differ. Recent San Cristóbal organizers have asked participants for combinations of:
- towel;
- light clothing for inside;
- dry or warm clothing for afterward;
- drinking water;
- fruit or food to share;
- flowers or another small altar offering.
Do not treat this as a universal packing list. Read the organizer’s own instructions for your ceremony.
Heat and safety matter
A temazcal exposes you to high heat and steam in an enclosed space. This is not appropriate for everyone.
Public-health guidance from the Secretaría de Salud de Puebla warns particularly about cardiovascular or blood-pressure problems, respiratory difficulty, dehydration and claustrophobia. It advises leaving immediately if you develop symptoms such as dizziness, weakness, vision problems, difficulty breathing or significant discomfort.
If you are pregnant or have a cardiovascular, respiratory, blood-pressure or other relevant medical condition, get appropriate medical advice before participating and tell the facilitator beforehand.
Never feel obligated to remain inside for ritual or social reasons if you feel unwell.
How to choose a ceremony
Before reserving, ask:
- who facilitates it;
- whether it is mixed, women-only or another format;
- approximate total duration and time inside the heated space;
- language used during the ceremony;
- maximum group size;
- what you need to bring;
- whether photography is prohibited;
- current contribution or price;
- whether any substances or practices beyond heat, steam, herbs, song or prayer are involved.
That last question is especially important: different organizers can use the same word temazcal for substantially different experiences.
