Roadblocks & Highway Closures in Chiapas: What Travelers Should Know
Roadblocks and temporary closures can disrupt travel around San Cristóbal with little notice. Check your operator and recent authority reports on the day of travel; treat Highway 199 toward Palenque as a separate security question.

Roadblocks, protests, accidents and road works can change travel plans around San Cristóbal de las Casas with little notice. Check the route again on the day you travel, especially before an airport transfer or long-distance bus.
Quick answer
For ordinary disruption: ask your bus, shuttle or tour operator whether the route is operating normally today.
For current closures: check recent municipal/state traffic, Protección Civil and security updates.
For Highway 199 toward Palenque: treat it as a separate security issue, not ordinary traffic; current FCDO advice warns against all but essential travel on part of that corridor.
Checking the route
No single permanent official page reliably shows every Chiapas closure in real time. For a time-sensitive trip, combine:
- the operator's same-day status;
- recent authority notices;
- extra time when a delay could affect a flight or connection.
An old timetable, screenshot or social-media post does not establish today's road status.
If your service is disrupted
Contact the operator first. Depending on the situation, it may delay, cancel, rebook or use an authorized alternative route.
Do not try to force your way through a blockade or improvise an unfamiliar rural detour because someone online says it is faster. Follow current operator and authority instructions.
For an immediate emergency in Mexico, call 911.

Highway 199 is a different risk
The current UK FCDO advisory reports frequent illegal roadblocks/checkpoints, protests and kidnapping risk on Federal Highway 199 between Rancho Nuevo and the Chancalá junction near Palenque. That is more than a normal traffic-delay problem.
