Maya Ruins near San Cristóbal de las Casas: Toniná, Tenam Puente & Palenque
For archaeology from San Cristóbal, Toniná is the highland option, Tenam Puente pairs naturally with a Comitán trip, and Palenque is a major jungle site that requires much more travel. Current Highway 199 advice makes Toniná and Palenque route planning especially important.

If archaeology is your priority, three sites make the most sense to compare from San Cristóbal: Toniná, Tenam Puente and Palenque.
Toniná: the highland option
Toniná is near Ocosingo, about 91 km from San Cristóbal. INAH currently lists the archaeological zone as open, and the site is known for its steep, terraced acropolis.
The main complication is the road: travel toward Ocosingo uses Federal Highway 199, where current UK travel advice warns against all but essential travel on part of the corridor. Check current conditions before planning the trip.

Tenam Puente: easiest to combine with Comitán
Tenam Puente is about 13 km southwest of Comitán. INAH currently lists it daily 08:00–17:00, last access 16:00, with admission of MXN 80 for Mexican visitors and MXN 145 for foreign visitors.
Its platforms, plazas and monumental architecture make it a useful archaeology stop if you are already traveling toward Comitán rather than toward Ocosingo.

Palenque: the major site, but not a simple day trip
Palenque is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the largest journey of the three from San Cristóbal. INAH currently lists the archaeological zone 08:00–17:00, last access 16:00.
From San Cristóbal, however, it is a much bigger journey. The road-safety context on Highway 199 is also important, so Palenque should not be treated as an easy casual day trip from San Cristóbal.

Which one should you choose?
Toniná: strongest if you specifically want a highland Maya site and current road conditions work for your plan.
Tenam Puente: easiest archaeology add-on to a Comitán-area trip.
Palenque: strongest destination in its own right, but better planned as a major onward/overnight trip.
