Toniná is one of Chiapas’s most important Maya archaeological sites, near Ocosingo. The site itself is currently open, but the road journey from San Cristóbal needs a current safety check before you travel.

Current opening
INAH currently lists Toniná as open Monday to Sunday from 08:00 to 17:00. The site reopened to the public in March 2026 after maintenance and recovery work.
Location
INAH places Toniná about 91 km from San Cristóbal de las Casas via the San Cristóbal–Ocosingo corridor. From Ocosingo, the archaeological zone is roughly 10 km farther east.
Important road-safety note
The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office currently advises against all but essential travel on Federal Highway 199 between Rancho Nuevo, just outside San Cristóbal, and the Chancalá junction near Palenque.
That corridor includes the direction used to reach Ocosingo from San Cristóbal. Current travel operators still advertise Toniná trips, but a tour listing is not proof that road conditions are suitable for every traveler or every date.
Before booking or driving, check current official travel advice and ask the operator about the route and conditions.
Tour vs independent travel
Under normal conditions, Toniná can be approached through Ocosingo, but the current Highway 199 advisory makes this different from an ordinary low-risk day trip such as Arcotete.
If you are considering a tour, verify the operator, current route, departure time, inclusions and cancellation policy. Do not choose only by the lowest price.
Time at the site
Allow enough time to walk the archaeological complex rather than treating it as a quick photo stop. INAH lists toilets and guided visits among the available services.
