Best Day Trips from San Cristóbal de las Casas
For a first trip, compare Chamula + Zinacantán for a nearby cultural half-day, Sumidero Canyon for a boat-and-scenery day, and El Chiflón + Montebello for a much longer waterfalls-and-lakes trip. Palenque usually works better overnight.

For a first trip, three excursions cover very different experiences:
- Chamula + Zinacantán — nearby cultural half-day
- Sumidero Canyon + Chiapa de Corzo — boat trip and canyon scenery
- El Chiflón + Lagunas de Montebello — long waterfalls-and-lakes day
Quick comparison
Closest cultural trip: Chamula + Zinacantán
Full nature day with less road time: Sumidero Canyon
Longest nature day: El Chiflón + Montebello
Only a few hours available: El Arcotete or Rancho Nuevo
Usually better with an overnight: Palenque
Chamula + Zinacantán
These communities are close enough for a half-day visit. Local rules and context matter, especially around religious spaces and photography.
Sumidero Canyon + Chiapa de Corzo
This combines a canyon boat ride with Chiapa de Corzo and generally requires less road time than the Montebello route.
El Chiflón + Lagunas de Montebello
Choose this route when waterfalls and lakes justify a very long day on the road.
Shorter outings
For only a few hours, El Arcotete and Grutas de Rancho Nuevo keep the trip close to San Cristóbal.
Palenque
Palenque and Agua Azul are sold as very long day tours from San Cristóbal, but Palenque usually works better as an overnight stay or onward destination. Current Highway 199 advice also makes this corridor a separate planning problem.
