What does a normal Sumidero Canyon visit include?

For most visitors staying in San Cristóbal, the standard day trip has three possible parts:

  1. boat ride through Cañón del Sumidero;
  2. free time in Chiapa de Corzo;
  3. road viewpoints above the canyon on tours that include them.

Do not assume every product includes all three. Check the itinerary before paying.

Official park information

CONANP currently lists Cañón del Sumidero National Park with:

  • opening hours of 08:00–17:00;
  • an entrance fee of MXN 125 per person;
  • aquatic access every day;
  • terrestrial access to the park route from Wednesday to Monday.

The park fee is not the same thing as the commercial boat ticket or transport from San Cristóbal.

Tour from San Cristóbal

For a first visit, a shared tour is usually the easiest option because it handles transport between San Cristóbal, the embarcadero, Chiapa de Corzo and—when included—the viewpoints.

Current local operators checked in August 2026 advertise full-day shared trips from San Cristóbal at approximately:

Prices, route order and inclusions vary. Verify whether the quoted price includes:

  • boat ticket;
  • CONANP park fee;
  • viewpoints;
  • pickup point;
  • return to San Cristóbal.

Can you visit independently?

Yes. The boat docks are in Chiapa de Corzo, and CONANP lists access by private vehicle, taxi, public transport and tourism operators.

Independent travel can be cheaper and more flexible, but it requires arranging the San Cristóbal → Chiapa de Corzo journey, buying the boat ticket, and deciding separately whether to visit the viewpoints.

Boat ride vs viewpoints

They are different experiences.

The boat ride takes you through the canyon from river level and is the main attraction for most first-time visitors.

The viewpoints give you the elevated perspective from the road above the canyon. If your tour says “Cañón + Chiapa de Corzo” but does not mention miradores, do not assume they are included.

How much time do you need?

A boat ride itself is commonly around 1½–2 hours. Add waiting, transport, Chiapa de Corzo and viewpoints, and the excursion becomes a full day from San Cristóbal.

If you only want the boat and Chiapa de Corzo independently, half a day can be possible depending on transport connections.

What to bring

The boat is open to the sun, wind and occasional spray.

Bring:

  • sun protection;
  • water;
  • a secure hat;
  • protection for your phone/camera;
  • light clothing for the warmer lowlands;
  • an extra layer for returning to cooler San Cristóbal.
