San Cristóbal works well for families if you keep the itinerary simple and avoid stacking long road days. Centro is walkable, several nature outings are close to town and one bigger excursion is usually enough for a short family trip.
A practical family plan
Day 1: Centro + one market or museum
Short nature outing: El Arcotete or Huitepec
Big excursion: Sumidero Canyon
Very long day: Palenque / Agua Azul itineraries can run 14–19 hours
Start with an easy day in Centro
The historic center lets you combine pedestrian streets, plazas, a market and one museum without arranging transport between every stop. Do not try to fit every museum into the same day.
Short nature: Arcotete or Huitepec
El Arcotete is the easier recreational outing close to the city. Huitepec is better if your family wants a forest walk; Pronatura currently lists a roughly 2 km trail.
Whether a trail works for a child depends on age, weather and walking experience.
One larger excursion
Sumidero Canyon is a reasonable choice if the family wants one full day outside the highlands. It involves road travel plus the canyon boat trip, so treat it as the main activity of the day.
Chamula and Zinacantán
This is a cultural visit, not a children’s attraction. Families should follow community rules carefully, especially the ban on photography inside the church in San Juan Chamula.
Trips that may be too long
Tours combining Palenque + Agua Azul + Misol-Ha can take roughly 14–19 hours from San Cristóbal and also require checking current Highway 199 travel advice. Do not treat that as equivalent to a short local outing.
Altitude and weather
San Cristóbal is around 2,200 meters above sea level. If your family arrives from the coast or another low-altitude destination, an easier first day is sensible. Cool evenings and rainy-season weather also make layers and rain protection useful.
