Long Stays
Choose a hostel exchange when accommodation and a fixed weekly schedule are the priority; choose community or nonprofit volunteering when the project matters more and you can commit longer, often without housing. Current examples include roughly 18–25 hours per week and about four-week minimums for some exchanges, but confirm each host’s terms and immigration conditions.
Voces Mesoamericanas — Acción con Pueblos Migrantes, based in San Cristóbal, currently publishes a volunteer program focused on migration and Indigenous communities in Los Altos de Chiapas. Its site asks for long stays of at least six months.
Impacto, a San Cristóbal organization working around textiles, economic justice, gender equity and cultural heritage, also has a current volunteer call for people contributing skills to its projects.
These are different commitments from a hostel shift-for-bed exchange. Read the organization’s role, time commitment and application process before applying.
Workaway also lists projects outside central San Cristóbal. A profile may use “San Cristóbal” as the nearest reference city even when the actual project is outside Centro or requires additional transport.
Check the map/location and ask:
Do not choose a rural project assuming you will be living in the historic center.
For any exchange, ask for the current terms in writing inside the platform or by email:
A listing that says “volunteer” does not tell you what the day-to-day exchange actually looks like.
Do not assume a hostel that offers Wi-Fi is suitable for calls or full workdays. Ask about the connection, quiet working space and your shift schedule before committing.

Workaway explicitly warns users who are not Mexican citizens to make sure they have the correct permission for volunteering, work or study. The right requirement depends on nationality, immigration status and the activity involved.
Do not assume that receiving accommodation instead of wages automatically settles the immigration question. Check the rules that apply to your own situation before committing.
