Best Museums in San Cristóbal de las Casas: Which Ones to Visit
San Cristóbal has many small museums, but they are not interchangeable. For a first visit, the strongest choices are Centro de Textiles del Mundo Maya for Maya textiles, Museo del Ámbar for Chiapas amber, Na Bolom for regional cultural history, and Museo de la Medicina Maya for traditional medicine. Choose by interest rather than trying to visit every museum.

Centro de Textiles del Mundo Maya / Museo de Los Altos
This is the strongest choice if you are interested in Maya textiles, weaving, clothing and material culture. The museum complex is inside the former Santo Domingo convent, making it easy to combine with Santo Domingo and the surrounding craft market.
Museo del Ámbar de Chiapas
This is the best museum if you want to understand Chiapas amber before buying it. The museum says it displays more than 350 classified pieces and explains origin, extraction, fossils, polishing, colors and how to identify real amber.
Current museum information lists regular hours Tuesday-Sunday, 10:00-14:00 and 16:00-19:00, with general admission MXN 50. Recheck before visiting because hours and prices can change.
Na Bolom
Na Bolom is useful for travelers interested in the history and cultures of the Chiapas highlands and Lacandon region. It offers a different experience from an art or object-focused museum because the house itself is part of the story.
Museo de la Medicina Maya
Choose this if you are specifically interested in traditional Maya medicine and the relationship between plants, healing practices and Indigenous communities.
If you only have time for one museum
- choose Centro de Textiles del Mundo Maya if textiles and Indigenous art interest you most;
- choose Museo del Ámbar if you plan to shop for amber;
