San Cristóbal de las Casas Self-Guided Walking Tour: Historic Center Route

For a first walk through San Cristóbal, use the Arco del Carmen → Plaza 31 de Marzo / Cathedral → Santo Domingo route. Add Real de Guadalupe → Guadalupe church only if you want a longer uphill finish.

Choose the route by available time

• Short walk: Arco del Carmen to Plaza 31 de Marzo and Santo Domingo
• Longer visit: add MUSAC or the Santo Domingo craft market
• Uphill extension: continue along Real de Guadalupe to Guadalupe church

The core route is much shorter than half a day. Allow roughly half a day only if you add a museum, market or long stop.

What to check on the day

The Guadalupe extension is uphill. If you only have about an hour, finish at Santo Domingo and skip the extension, museums and extended shopping.

Why these stops?

Start at Arco del Carmen on the south side of the historic center and walk north to the main plaza. Visit Chiapas dates the arch to 1677.

At Plaza 31 de Marzo, stop at the Cathedral. Nearby, Plaza de la Paz—also called Plaza Catedral in municipal material—is a recurring public-event space. is part of the same central plaza area if the current exhibition interests you.
