Driving & Parking in San Cristóbal de las Casas

Use a car for arriving by road, staying outside Centro or continuing to places with limited public transport. Once you are sightseeing in the historic center, park once and walk rather than circling for another street space.

Confirm overnight parking before arrival and check current traffic restrictions. The city enforces illegal parking, public street spaces cannot be privately reserved and Uno X Uno intersections require drivers to slow, stop and take turns.

If your hotel or rental has parking

Confirm parking before you arrive, especially in Centro. Ask whether the space is:

• on the property or in a separate lot;
• included in the room price;
• available overnight;
• suitable for the size of your vehicle.

Do not assume that “parking available” means you can leave the car directly outside the building.

Public parking in Centro

Public parking lots around the historic center are the simplest fallback when your accommodation has no parking. Capacity, hours and prices vary, so confirm the conditions at the entrance before leaving the car.

For several hours in Centro, parking once and walking is usually simpler than repeatedly looking for a legal street space.

Illegal parking is enforced

San Cristóbal’s Dirección de Tránsito Municipal reported enforcement operations in February 2026 against vehicles parked in prohibited areas, including cars left on sidewalks. Officers asked drivers to move vehicles and issued citations when necessary.

Follow posted restrictions and do not block sidewalks, pedestrian access, driveways or other prohibited areas.

Public street spaces cannot be privately reserved

In July 2026, Tránsito Municipal removed 75 objects being used to hold parking spaces on streets around the city. The municipality cited Article 98 of the municipal traffic regulation, which prohibits placing objects that obstruct use of the public roadway.

Practically, a chair, crate, bucket or similar object placed in a public street space is not the same thing as an official parking reservation. Follow signs and traffic-officer instructions; if a space is legally restricted, the restriction should come from the applicable traffic rules rather than a private object left in the street.

San Cristóbal launched an Espacios Azules accessibility program in July 2026. The first stage creates for people with disabilities or reduced mobility, pregnant people and people with temporary mobility limitations.
