Where to Stay in San Cristóbal de las Casas: Neighborhood Guide
For a first visit, Centro or Real de Guadalupe is usually easiest. Cerrillo/Santo Domingo offers a quieter central compromise, while upper Guadalupe and Mexicanos suit travelers comfortable with more walking or a more residential feel. Check the exact block, not only the neighborhood name.

Centro Histórico
Choose Centro if you want the easiest access to the main plaza, pedestrian streets, Santo Domingo and most first-visit sights.
The trade-off is noise. If you sleep lightly, check whether the room faces a busy street, bar area or interior courtyard.
Real de Guadalupe
Best if you want cafés, restaurants and easy walking into Centro. The lower section near the center is busier; farther east toward the Guadalupe church becomes more residential and uphill.
This is a strong option if you do not want to depend on taxis for normal daily movement.
Cerrillo / Santo Domingo
A useful compromise: close enough to walk to Centro and Santo Domingo, but some streets are calmer than the busiest pedestrian corridors.
Choose it if you want a traditional barrio feel without moving far from the central visitor area.
Barrio de Guadalupe
Still close to the center, but more residential and hillier as you move upward. It suits travelers who enjoy walking and want a little distance from the busiest central blocks.
Check the exact location if you have heavy luggage, mobility limitations or dislike steep streets.
Barrio de Mexicanos
A more residential base that can work especially well for longer stays. It makes less sense for a very short first trip if your priority is having every sight and restaurant immediately outside the door.

The exact block matters more than the barrio name
The exact block. Two properties marketed under the same neighborhood can differ a lot in street noise, hills, parking and actual walking distance. Check the real map pin before booking.
Also ask about room warmth if you are sensitive to cold; San Cristóbal evenings can feel cool, especially in winter and rainy periods.
Staying near the bus terminal
The main ADO/OCC long-distance terminal is south of Centro on Av. Insurgentes. Staying beside it may help for a very early departure, but most visitors do not need to organize their whole stay around the terminal.
