Grutas del Mamut is a cave-and-recreation area about 7 km from San Cristóbal on the road toward Tenejapa. The municipality improved the access road in April 2026. Current sources disagree on entrance prices, so verify the fee rather than relying on an old amount.

For archaeology from San Cristóbal, Toniná is the highland option, Tenam Puente pairs naturally with a Comitán trip, and Palenque is a major jungle site that requires much more travel. Current Highway 199 advice makes Toniná and Palenque route planning especially important.

Sima de las Cotorras is possible as a long day trip from San Cristóbal, but it makes most sense if you plan around the early-morning bird activity. Current tours leave around 06:00 and combine the sinkhole with El Aguacero; staying closer to Tuxtla can be better for a dawn visit.
