Begin at Arco del Carmen, then walk north through the central pedestrian streets. This gives you a simple introduction to the scale of the historic center without requiring transport.
Continue to Plaza 31 de Marzo, the main civic plaza, and the adjacent Catedral de San Cristóbal Mártir.
Do not spend the morning trying to enter every church or museum. With only one day, the route matters more than collecting attractions.
Late morning: Santo Domingo
Walk toward Templo de Santo Domingo de Guzmán, one of the city’s most recognizable historic buildings.
From here, choose one deeper stop:
- Centro de Textiles del Mundo Maya if you want context for Maya textile traditions;
- Mercado de Artesanías Santo Domingo if you would rather browse crafts and keep moving.

Afternoon: Real de Guadalupe
After lunch, walk along Real de Guadalupe. The street is useful as part of the route rather than as a single attraction: cafés, shops and side streets make it easy to slow down without adding more transport.
If you still have energy, continue uphill to Templo de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe. The climb is optional; skip it if rain, altitude or mobility makes the stairs inconvenient.
Evening
For dinner, return toward Centro or eat around Guadalupe. If you want something after dinner, do not rely on an old nightlife list for a specific night.
