Trip Planning

San Cristóbal de las Casas 3-Day Itinerary: What to Do in 3 Days

A strong first 3-day plan is simple: one day in San Cristóbal’s historic center, one day for San Juan Chamula and Zinacantán, and one major nature day such as Sumidero Canyon. Add a fourth day if you also want El Chiflón and Montebello.

For a first visit, three days works well: one day in the city, one cultural day trip and one nature day trip.

Day 1: historic center, Santo Domingo, markets and Guadalupe
Day 2: San Juan Chamula + Zinacantán
Day 3: Sumidero Canyon + Chiapa de Corzo

If waterfalls and lakes matter more than the canyon, swap Day 3 for El Chiflón + Lagunas de Montebello.

Day 1: San Cristóbal on foot

Keep the first day simple. Walk the central streets and pedestrian corridors, see Santo Domingo, browse a market and leave time for one museum or café rather than trying to cover every attraction.

Useful guides:

Day 2: Chamula and Zinacantán

Use the second day for San Juan Chamula and Zinacantán. They are close enough to combine, but they are living communities with their own rules rather than tourist attractions.

Photography and video are prohibited inside the church in Chamula. A guide can add useful cultural context, but independent transport is also possible.

How to Visit Chamula & Zinacantán

Day 3: choose one major nature trip

For most first-time visitors, Sumidero Canyon is the clearest choice. A typical excursion combines the boat trip with Chiapa de Corzo and sometimes viewpoints.

Choose El Chiflón + Lagunas de Montebello instead if waterfalls and lakes are a higher priority and you are comfortable with a longer road day.

If you have less or more time

2 days: city + either Chamula/Zinacantán or Sumidero.
4 days: add the major nature trip you skipped.
5+ days: slow the pace rather than adding a long excursion every day.

For a short visit, staying in or close to Centro keeps Day 1 mostly walkable: Where to Stay.

San Cristóbal sits at roughly 2,200 m / 7,200 ft, and mornings and evenings can be cool. Check Altitude and Best Time to Visit before packing.
